WIRED put up a mesmerizing gallery of microscopy photos created for the Nikon Small World competition.
There are many brilliant shots to thumb through: some showing the complexity of mouse vertebra, the regularity of a turtle retina, and the delicate mesh of a developing mouse embryo's nervous system.
The image above is a chameleon embryo stained for bone (red) and cartilage (blue) taken by Dorit Hockman, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, who submitted photos of three embryonic bats to the 2012 competition.
